4 Ways You Can Protect Your Hair Color

1. Right Shampoo & Conditioner

Sulfates are found in many brands of shampoo and conditioner, and they’re included for their foaming and lathering capabilities. However, sulfates can also deplete your hair of its natural oils, as well as strip away color. 2. Wait Before Shampooing

Regardless of what type of shampoo you use, stylists recommend abstaining from shampooing for at least 48 hours after having your hair treated. It’s also recommended that you shampoo your hair less frequently after it’s colored, limiting yourself to two or three times a week. While shampoo cleans your scalp, it also dries your hair of oils. The more natural oils that remain in your hair, the longer you’ll retain your vibrant new color. 

3. Cool Water When Washing

Much like your skin pores, hot water opens your hair cuticles, which can result in the color being washed away faster. Instead, wash hair with warm water and rinse with cold water. The warm water ensures soap and conditioner penetrate the cuticles and cleanse your hair, while the cold water seals the hair cuticle to keep color in place. 

4. Choose Hair Color Wisely

Some colors are more susceptible to faster fading. For instance, red tends to fade the fastest, while browns tend to last the longest.
