Frozen pipes are a concern whenever temperatures start to drop. The cold causes pressure to build up inside the pipes, and once this can't be contained, it will make the pipe burst. This is a common reason homes experience emergency water damage during the colder months of the year. To prevent frozen pipes, follow these four tips.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

1. Put Heating Tape on Pipes

Heating tape wraps around pipes to provide insulation. There are two types of heating tape. One turns itself on and off automatically when temperatures reach a certain point. The other type requires you to plug it when needed. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations exactly, as heating tape must be used properly to avoid fires.

2. Maintain Warm, Consistent Indoor Temperatures

Ensure all the inside doors are open, so the warm air can circulate freely. While it may cost a little more now to keep the home heated, you are saving even more on emergency water damage cleanup and restoration later.

3. Keep a Faucet Dripping Lightly

All the emergency water damage that stems from a burst pipe is not actually caused by frozen water; instead, it’s the pressure accumulation in the line. Leaving a faucet on to drip very lightly will help relieve some of this pressure. If the faucet has both hot- and cold-water knobs, keep both slightly open, so neither one freezes.

4. Add Insulation

Check the insulation in the walls that contain your home's pipes. If the walls are cold to the touch, then the pipes are likely cold as well. Consider adding extra layers of insulation or spraying in some additional foam. Also, make sure all cracks in the exterior walls are filled and sealed.
