Dancers put their bodies through a rigorous, high-energy workout every time they take the stage. The occasional injury is part of the job, but back injuries are especially limiting, as they involve significant back pain and lengthy recovery times. Below, learn more about a few back injuries common among dangers.

A Dancer's Guide to Back Injuries

1. Stress Fractures

Stress fractures of the lower back result from repeated extensions or jumping with inadequate core engagement. These fractures produce back pain throughout the spine and down into the buttocks. They are most common in adolescent dancers, and male dancers are more likely than female dancers to develop a stress fracture. Recovery typically includes physical therapy and strengthening exercises.

2. Muscle Pulls

back painThe quadratus lumborum is the deepest abdominal muscle, and it is in the lower back. Pulling this muscle results in noticeable back pain. Women experience it in the lower back, while men tend to feel it slightly higher. The pain is central to this area and does not radiate to other parts of the body. It is prevalent in dancers without full upper body strength and among male dancers who lift without proper balance. Chiropractic care and rest can remedy most pulled muscles.

3. Herniated Discs

Between the bones of the spine, there are rubbery discs that provide cushioning and support. If the exterior casing of the disc tears, the center of the disc can protrude through the opening, a condition known as a herniated disc.

In dancers, it is a severe injury that requires several months of physical therapy or chiropractic care. Misalignment or overtaxing of the lumbar spine is one cause, but sometimes twisting or moving the back in the wrong way can be enough to herniate a disc.
