When couples are looking at apartments, one of the first decisions they face is whether to get one bedroom or two. There are a lot of variables to consider when making this choice. Here’s what you should think about before reaching a decision.

Consider the Cost

The first detail you need to figure out is how much you can afford. One-bedroom apartments typically cost a little less two-bedroom apartments. You’ll need to weigh the value of the extra space versus the higher rent.

Possible Uses for a Second Bedroom

Home Office

imageOne common use for a second bedroom is a home office. If you work from home, you need space set aside to keep work separate and organize. In an apartment, you’re already working with limited space, so two-bedroom apartments are an excellent choice if you need that additional space for work.

Storage Space

Second bedrooms are often used for storage space. Have you taken stock of everything that you’ll be bringing with you when you move? Figure out how much furniture and other belongings you’ll both want to keep.

Will the floor-space of a one-bedroom apartment provide you with all the room you need? If not, you may need to consider a two-bedroom to have an extra room to store belongings you don’t want to leave behind.

Extra Bedroom

Even if it’s just the two of you moving in, sometimes you need an extra bedroom. Having a guest room can be useful if friends and family visit frequently. Also, if you’re planning on having children soon, you should consider the extra bedroom.
