Auto body repair is often an unanticipated expense. As such, it’s reasonable to wonder whether insurance will cover it if your vehicle needs work. Because every policy is different, the only way to determine if you’ll have to pay for the necessary repairs out of pocket is by reviewing the terms closely. There are some generalities, however, regarding insurance and auto body repairs. Here’s what you should know.

What Repairs Are Covered?

Standard car insurance will cover damage that occurs during a collision. Because North Carolina is a fault state, though, you can’t file a claim with your provider. Assuming the at-fault motorist has adequate liability coverage, you might instead file a third-party property damage claim with his or her carrier.

If the at-fault driver doesn't have insurance, you can file a claim with your provider, assuming you have uninsured/underinsured coverage. If you were the one who caused the wreck, you’ll have to file a claim under your own collision coverage.

Because collisions aren't the only scenario that can damage a vehicle, though, carriers also offer comprehensive coverage. This optional insurance covers damage resulting from vandalism, theft, fire, severe weather, and other unanticipated events. It will also reimburse you if your vehicle is stolen.

What Issues Are Always Excluded?

auto body repairGenerally speaking, insurance does not cover periodic maintenance or standard wear and tear. For example, you can't file a claim for every oil change or tire rotation. Likewise, carriers won't reimburse you for repairing damage that wasn't caused by a covered event. If you purchase an older vehicle and the transmission dies or the timing belt goes, your insurer won’t cover it.

How Can I Determine if My Insurer Will Cover the Necessary Repairs?

The easiest way to determine if your carrier will cover repairs is by reviewing the terms of your policy. If the policy is unclear, confirm the cause of damage and the quote for fixing it with your mechanic, and then call a claims adjuster. After evaluating the situation, they’ll let you know if the repairs will be covered and whether they work with the shop that provided the quote.
