If you’re noticing tooth decay or sensitive gums but stay on top of your oral hygiene, the medication you’re taking may be to blame. Luckily, your family dentist can help you find a solution to this side effect. Below is what to look out for to protect your oral health.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, also referred to as xerostomia, is the most common side effect of taking over-the-counter and prescription medication. While dry mouth doesn’t sound like a huge problem, it can cause larger issues.

When your mouth is constantly dry, your gums can dry out, plaque isn’t as easily washed away, and your teeth can weaken. If left untreated, this can lead to an increase in deep cavities and cracked or chipped teeth.

Medications that can cause dry mouth include:

  • Antidepressants
  • Antihistamines
  • Chemotherapy medication
  • Anti-anxiety medication
  • Anti-seizure drugs
  • Narcotics

Gum Thickening

Family DentistCertain medications can make your gums swell and grow thicker over the top of your teeth. Swollen gums are not only painful but give bacteria more places to hide. Without careful hygiene and routine cleanings from your family dentist, this can lead to a bad case of gum disease. Medications that can cause your gums to thicken include cyclosporin, some blood pressure medication, epilepsy medication, and calcium channel blockers.

Enamel Discoloration

There are a number of antibiotics and antiseptics that can cause your teeth to yellow. The positive news is that these medications don’t normally lead to further complications of the teeth and gums. A whitening treatment may be able to restore the color back to your teeth. Medications that cause enamel discoloration can include antibiotics for bacterial infections, acne and respiratory issues, and some antiseptics.
