While you’re making funeral service arrangements for a loved one, you might also consider hosting a wake or a visitation. Both of these events are opportunities for family members and friends of the deceased to gather and pay their respects. However, while they’re often used interchangeably, they do slightly differ from one another depending on where you live. Here’s what you should know, so you can make the appropriate plans.

Wakes

Wakes are also referred to as viewings. This is a quiet, reflective gathering where people can express their condolences to the family, talk to others who are grieving, and share memories. The most obvious difference between this and a visitation is that the body is present at a wake, either in an open or closed casket. However, a visitation can still be held with or without the deceased present; for instance, if the deceased was cremated.

If it’s held the night before, this allows people to attend who would not be able to attend the service due to work or other commitments. Wakes, or family night visitations, are normally held at the funeral home; however, they may also take place at a spiritual location, like a church or a temple where the service is to take place.

Visitations

A visitation is more informal and occurs either before the funeral service or the night before allowing people to come and go as they please. Traditionally, the body is present at a visitation in either an urn, or an open or closed casket. This is usually the choice of the family of the deceased. This, too, is a chance for mourners to gather and share their grief with others and communicate their condolences to the family. It also allows people to visit and socialize with others who they might not have seen for a long time.

If it was the deceased’s or the family’s choice for cremation, a visitation or a memorial service can still be held at a later, more convenient, date and can be held at their home, their place of worship, or the funeral home.
