Whether it is a lingering sore throat or the development of a tender area, swelling of the neck area is alarming if you don’t understand the cause. When dealing with glandular or node problems of the neck, a throat doctor can provide a thorough evaluation of your condition. After the diagnosis, they will develop a treatment plan to address your swelling and ease your worries.

What Causes Neck Inflammation?

While a mass in the neck can come from a cyst, enlarged salivary gland, or thyroid gland, the most common reason they develop is due to swollen lymph nodes. These nodes can swell from a variety of conditions, including throat infections, respiratory illnesses, or bacterial infections directly in the node. While swollen lymph nodes can sometimes indicate cancer, this is rare, and your throat doctor can rule it out during the exam.

When Should You See a Doctor?

throat doctorSwollen lymph nodes from regular colds or throat infections typically last two to three days before resolving on their own. If the swelling in your neck persists, you should have a doctor perform a physical exam and evaluate your symptoms. Neck lumps are typically harmless, but your doctor may order additional testing if the mass is hard, you have difficulty swallowing, a new lump appears, or you develop sores in the mouth. This testing may include a chest X-ray, ultrasound, or tissue sample to eliminate any severe conditions.

What Treatments Are Available?

After determining the cause of the mass, your throat doctor will prescribe treatment. For recurring infections, they may recommend additional hydration and antibiotics. If the reason for the swelling is due to cancer, the will remove the lump and likely suggest radiation therapy.
