The third molars, commonly called wisdom teeth, are the last teeth to erupt. The mouth isn’t designed to accommodate them, and as they try to push through, they’ll create a variety of oral health issues. They first appear between ages 17-25, and it’s important to recognize when extraction is necessary. Use the following guide and work with your dentist to stay ahead of complications.

Everything You Need to Know About Wisdom Teeth

When They Need to Be Removed

Wisdom teeth can be painful when they come in. You may experience swelling, and if they erupt crookedly, they may cut into your cheek or tongue. They can also become impacted. These teeth aren’t able to erupt and instead become buried in the soft gum tissue below. Since you aren’t able to clean them, they’ll start to decay, which can lead to cavities, severe infections, gum disease, and other serious complications.

It’s important to connect with your dentist if you discover any of these symptoms so they can perform an extraction.

Aftercare

Wisdom tooth extraction recovery is generally a one-week process. It’s wise to schedule a ride home following surgery because you may be groggy from the anesthesia. You’ll want to begin using an ice pack on your cheek right away to reduce swelling and discomfort. Keep it on for 15 minutes, remove it for 15 minutes, and repeat as necessary. Your dentist may also prescribe painkillers or recommend OTC pain medication to further reduce discomfort.

You’ll want to protect the wound for the first few days. Enjoy soft, lukewarm foods like applesauce, smoothies, and soup. You can swish a warm saltwater solution to clean the wound and can begin brushing your teeth 24 hours after the surgery. Don’t brush near the surgical site for at least three days, however; you don’t want to dislodge the blood clot.

The biggest danger you face is dry socket, a painful condition that develops when you dislodge the blood clot on the surgical site. Avoid drinking from a straw or spitting forcefully. Smoking can cause several complications, as well. If you develop a fever, have trouble swallowing, or experience uncontrollable bleeding, contact your dentist for an emergency exam.
