In a world of TV and video games, it’s not always easy to get your children excited about books. However, reading plays an integral role in their education and development. There are several strategies you can use to get them enthusiastic about this activity. Here a few you can use at home to supplement what they’re taught at their early childhood learning center.

How to Get Your Child Excited About Reading

1. Schedule Daily Reading Aloud Time

The best way to reinforce reading habits is to build a schedule. Set aside time each day for reading aloud. It can be right after they come home from their early childhood learning center, after dinner, or before bed. What’s most important is that you read every day so that it becomes a normal, expected part of their schedule.

2. Choose a Diverse Selection of Books

Encourage them to explore non-fiction about their favorite animal or sports, several modern fiction books, a classic from your childhood, and educational books about sharing and growth.

3. Create a Reading Nook

You can make reading more fun by creating a cozy nook. Set up a reading tent in your child’s room or pile floor pillows and beanbags up by a large window. You can fill the area with your child’s stuffed animals and build a bookshelf where they can keep their favorites and others they rent from the library. Let your child help with the design so that it feels like a personal space.

4. Choose Age-Appropriate Books

Choose age- and skill level-appropriate content to make sure that your child enjoys themselves. The library often organizes books this way to make them easier to find. You can also ask the staff at their early childhood learning center for recommendations.
