Age spots are flat, darkened areas that appear on frequently-exposed skin, especially on your face, hands, arms, and shoulders. Age spots themselves are harmless and do not present or indicate any other health problems, but there are optional age spot treatments available for aesthetic reasons.

Causes of Age Spots

Age spots are caused by overactive pigment and melanin production from sun and ultraviolet light exposure. They are most commonly found in groups on fair-skinned adults and don’t fade like freckles.age spot treatment

A dermatologist can visibly inspect and identify age spots and may recommend a biopsy if they resemble skin cancer.

To prevent age spots, use generous amounts of full-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply at least every two hours and wear protective clothing and hats. Avoid tanning beds and sun exposure from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Age Spot Treatment Options

While cosmetics are often effective to blend and conceal blemishes, there are several age spot treatment options to consider.

  • Topical: Over-the-counter or prescription bleaching creams penetrate the skin and break down melanin. Age spots typically fade over a few months, depending on the cream’s concentration of hydroquinone and steroids.
  • Laser therapy: A laser targets melanin and melanin-producing cells. This typically involves two or three painless sessions with a professional dermatologist.
  • Chemical peel: An acidic solution is applied to the skin to create a controlled wound. Damaged top layers of skin shed to reveal unblemished, healthy skin. Treatment can be repeated every six weeks to six months.
  • Microdermabrasion: After local anesthesia is administered, a rotating brush exfoliates the skin to promote the growth of new, smooth skin. Microdermabrasion is a less intense treatment for mild cases.
  • Cryosurgery: Liquid nitrogen is applied and freezes age spots. It can be sprayed over clusters but is most commonly placed on individual sites. It’s less commonly used for facial age spots because it may cause irritation and scarring.
  • Natural remedies: Acids like lemons and apple cider vinegar can be applied to the skin several times a week to break down melanin. Hydrogen peroxide, buttermilk, and aloe vera may also help reduce visibility.

After any age spot treatment, expect to experience redness, dryness, and itchiness. Discuss with your dermatologist the strength of treatment needed and its corresponding healing time so you can plan accordingly. Your skin will be more sensitive to UV damage, so be extra cautious as you protect your skin from sun exposure.
