Renal cancer refers to malignant tumors of the kidneys. The American Cancer Society predicts over 73,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2020. While the survival rate tends to be high with early detection, it is still a frequent cause of death and one of the most common cancers affecting adults. Here's what you should know about its risk factors and how lifestyle choices affect them.

What Causes Renal Cancer?

1. Uncontrollable Factors

This condition is more likely in adulthood and is usually diagnosed between age 50 and age 70. It affects men two to three times as often as women. It's slightly more common in African American populations and in those with a family history of this disease or of other cancers. While you can't change these factors, you should at least share them with your doctor so they're aware of your heightened risk.

2. Substance Exposure

Just as with many other types of tumors, smoking is a major risk factor. Other substances besides tobacco also hurt your odds. These include workplace exposure to trichloroethylene; common over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen; and the element cadmium, which is found in batteries, paint, and other materials.

cancerTo reduce your risk, stop or at least cut back on tobacco use, consult with your doctor about your over-the-counter medications and how frequently you should use them, and use appropriate safety equipment when working with potential carcinogens.

3. Health Conditions

Besides hereditary cancer-causing syndromes, other diseases and conditions are also tied to kidney tumors. There is some correlation with obesity, and high blood pressure is also a factor, so you should strive for a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise to control both. Other kidney diseases, especially chronic conditions, are also tied to tumors, so if you have these issues, talk to your doctor about your risk.
