After several months of dormancy, it’s essential to make sure that your lawn mower is ready for springtime. It’s not as simple as pulling it out of storage and turning it on. Before you do that, there are several steps that you must take. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for Springtime

1. Clean It Thoroughly

Whether it was in the shed or the garage, it’s possible that your lawn mower accumulated some grime during the offseason. Begin by cleaning the surface thoroughly. You can direct water on it with a hose and remove any dirt or debris that remains with a gentle washcloth.

2. Inspect the Spark Plug

Then, remove the spark plug; it’s likely to be dirty from last season, which could affect the mower’s ability to cut cleanly. Clean it with a brake cleansing product and a wire brush, taking care to gently remove any corrosion or other debris that may have settled onto the surface.

Then, wipe it down with a dry cloth. Replace the spark plug securely and test the mower. If it doesn’t start or cut properly, consider replacing it entirely.

3. Refresh the Oil

Webster Groves, MO lawn mowerTo change the oil in the lawn mower, you’ll need to remove the spark plug again to prevent the mower from starting by mistake. Then detach the oil drain plug situated at the engine’s base. This allows any dirty oil that remains inside to filter out.

After it’s thoroughly drained, put the plug back in place and pour the appropriate oil in the crankcase. Avoid overfilling it, as that could cause damage to the equipment.

4. Check the Filter

Air filters are designed to trap harmful particles that could otherwise compromise the mower’s efficiency and force the engine to work harder than necessary while in operation. To prevent that, replace the filter every spring by removing the spark plug wire and detaching the filter’s cover.

If you have a pleated paper filter that’s torn, dispose of it and replace it; if it’s just a bit dirty, you can dust it off and continue to use it. If you have a foam filter, replace it if it appears to be worn, or wash it if it’s in good condition.

5. Assess the Blade

Your mower depends on a sharp blade to do its best work. Make sure it’s ready for the job by sharpening the blade, either with a sharpening stone or a file. Use your tool of choice to remove burs. This will ensure that your mower cuts cleanly throughout the season, but for the best results, sharpen the blade again at the halfway point.
