Gum disease is an infection of the gums that’s usually caused by poor oral hygiene. It occurs when plaque, a sticky substance containing bacteria, builds up in the mouth. Over time, the disease damages the tissue and bone beneath the teeth and increases the risk of tooth loss. While gum disease is most common in adults, it can also affect teenagers and kids, usually in a mild form called gingivitis. To help you protect your child’s oral health, here’s what all parents should know.

All About Gum Disease in Children

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, include swollen, red, or sore gums that may bleed while brushing or flossing. Persistent bad breath and tooth sensitivity are also common.

With the help of a dentist and dedicated oral care at home, gum disease can be stopped at this early stage. If left untreated, though, gingivitis may eventually advance to periodontitis, which carries a risk of receding gums, changes in bite and jaw alignment, and tooth loss.

How Is It Treated?

oral hygieneSince gum disease is less common or severe in children, regular dental cleanings are usually enough to treat it. You should also teach your child proper oral hygiene habits, namely brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily.

Some teenagers may develop periodontitis as a result of poor oral care, leading to the need for advanced treatment methods. Deep cleaning involves scaling, in which the dentist removes plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) beneath the gumline with a small metal tool, and root planing, in which the dentist smooths out the teeth roots to help them reattach to the gums.

The dentist may also prescribe medications like antibiotics for your child to take by mouth or place antibiotic medicine in the periodontal pockets caused by the infection. Severe cases may also necessitate surgery to reshape or replace damaged tissues.
