A crankcase contains several engine components. Any gases in that space are transferred via the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve into a series of combustion chambers. The mixture is then accepted by the intake manifold, from where it’s supplied to the engine. As such, a damaged PCV valve will impact your vehicle’s efficiency. Here are three signs it’s time to visit an auto parts supplier for a replacement.

When to Replace Your PCV Valve

1. Sudden Increase in Oil Usage

A failed PCV valve can cause several problems with your vehicle. You’ll automatically burn through fuel more quickly. Moreover, you may notice a puddle of oil below the car. If there’s a leak, it could be due to pressure buildup inside the crankcase. When that happens, oil is forced through gaskets and openings to relax some of that pressure.

2. Check Engine Light Turns On

While there are many reasons for this common warning, it’s worth considering whether it’s related to the PCV valve, especially if you’re filling up the gas tank more often than usual. If that’s the case, swapping the auto part should resolve the problem unless there’s specific damage to the engine.

3. Unusual Noises From the Engine

A failed PCV valve can also cause the engine to make unexpected noises. The most common noise related to this component is hissing, which may develop if the hose has a leak. Although you should visit a mechanic at the first sign of trouble, the issue may be resolved by replacing the PCV valve with a replacement from the auto parts store.
