Generators can be a lifesaver, providing much-needed power during an outage. Their effectiveness is directly correlated with how well-maintained they are. Below are three common generator issues and how to address them.

3 Common Problems Generators Experience

1. Dead Battery

Of all generator issues, battery failure is one of the most common and can be the result of numerous causes. Oftentimes, lead sulfates will accumulate on the lead plates of your battery from overexposure to air, preventing the battery from providing the required electrical current to the generator.

Another common cause is a charger breaker being open or tripped. This can happen if the charger has been turned off but not turned back on again. Loose and dirty connections can also be the culprit for a failed battery.

generatorsTo prevent these issues, you’ll want to make sure the batteries, chargers, cables, and connections are cleaned and tightened regularly. Monitor the battery charge rates monthly and ensure your battery is always charged. A well-maintained battery will typically have a lifespan of about three years.

2. Leaking

Without regular maintenance, generators are also prone to leaking oil, fuel, and/or coolant. Leaks are commonly caused by failing block heater hoses, as the hoses will disintegrate from overexposure to extreme block heater temperatures.

Another common cause of leaking is known as wet stacking, which is when the exhaust pipes in the engine release a thick, dark substance. This can happen when the cylinders become over-saturated with fuel and can’t efficiently utilize all of it.

Leak-related issues are best resolved with regular generator maintenance. During maintenance, an electrical contractor will check for dry rot or other damage, ensure all fluid is clean and correctly filled, and look for proper torque.

3. Low Fuel

Another issue is low fuel, which can be a result of a faulty fuel gauge. When mechanical gauges become stuck, they’ll fail to alert low fuel levels. As a result, your fuel supply may be completely depleted when you need it most. To avoid this issue, you should manually check fuel levels about every month or so and replace it as needed.
