Losing a loved one is one of the most challenging experiences you’ll face in a lifetime. Not only do you have to cope with grief, but there are immediate decisions about the arrangements that need to be made. Those decisions include whether to have a full traditional funeral service followed by either a burial or cremation, a graveside funeral service, a memorial service when a cremation has been done, or a direct cremation with no services, or possibly services being held at a later and more convenient date. Fortunately, a funeral director can be a helpful resource to support you through this difficult time. Here are four questions to ask when interviewing a potential service provider.

What to Ask a Funeral Director

1. How Long Have You Been in Business?

While experience isn’t everything, it is valuable. Some funeral homes have served the community for generations and earned a reputation for their compassion, respect, and expertise.

While newer establishments can provide quality service as well, it is generally best to entrust such complicated matters to established professionals. Also, ask if the funeral home is locally owned and operated. Those that are may provide a more personal touch.

2. What do Services Cost?

funeraldirectorIt may feel uncomfortable to discuss financial matters regarding the loss of a loved one; however, funeral, burial, or cremation arrangements can be expensive depending on the funeral home of your choosing. It is essential to understand all of the costs involved, including a basic services fee, as well as planning, and securing death certificates, and permits if required.

You may also need to pay for the use of a hearse or embalming, which is not required by law, unless under certain circumstances. The director should walk you through your options to help you create a service within your budget.

3. What Facilities & Services Do You Offer?

During your initial meeting, the funeral director should take you for a tour of the facilities to help you decide what room is best for the ceremony. Also, ask them what services they provide and who will give it.

For example, some funeral homes transport guests to the burial site or have an on-site hearse, while others contract these services out. There’s nothing wrong with hiring contractors, but it is helpful to know who you’ll be working with throughout the process.

4. Can I Customize the Service?

Some funeral homes specialize in traditional funerals, while others are open to accommodating more unique requests, including “celebration of life” memorials. An experienced funeral director should arrange a ceremony that reflects your loved one’s beliefs and wishes, whether that would include military honors if they honorably served their country, a religious observance, or perhaps a secular service. Remember, the funeral director is there to help and guide you while honoring your wishes.
