Vinyl siding is popular among American homeowners for various reasons. It's attractive, durable, and provides a strong barrier between the interior of your home and the exterior elements. While vinyl is easy to maintain, it does require some upkeep. Consider the guide below to find out why you should include your home's siding on your spring-cleaning checklist.

The Importance of Cleaning Vinyl Siding

Dust and pollen build up on the exterior of your house over time. When moisture in the form of dew or rain is added, these particles stick to the side of the house. The moisture can also cause mildew to grow, especially in tough-to-dry areas—such as the surface between the wall and the gutter—where sunlight can't reach. The resulting buildup creates a dirty surface, detracting from the home's appearance, and concealing signs of damage.

Perform a visual inspection of the siding to check for any existing damage. A thorough wash should be coupled with gutter cleaning, during which leaves and twigs that have gotten stuck in the gutters throughout the winter are removed. If needed, this is also an opportunity to install new siding and gutters—especially if the gutters became detached due to high winds.

How to Clean Your Vinyl Siding

Unless you're a professional, avoid pressure washers. If you turn the water pressure up too high, the force can rip the siding off completely. High water pressure targeting the bottom of a piece of siding can detach the panel just enough to allow water to seep underneath. This will get the wood beneath damp, resulting in rot—and leaving the frame of your home unstable.

Instead, use a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush. Long-handled brushes are available to reach areas that are higher up. You can create a cleaning solution with one-third cup laundry detergent, two-thirds cup household cleaner, and one quart of bleach. Mix all of these components with one gallon of water. As you work, start from the top and move down, so that you can catch drips as you go. Move the brush slowly from top to bottom. Don't push up at the bottom of siding panels, as this can dislodge them.
