If public speaking is not your forte, it’s natural to feel anxious when asked to deliver the eulogy at a funeral service. As you will receive or write the speech well before the event, set aside time to practice, as preparation should put your fears aside. To gain the confidence to deliver a touching eulogy that will honor your loved one, follow the advice outlined here.

A Guide to Delivering Eulogies

1. Practice Reading It Aloud to Someone

Although you might practice reading the eulogy in your head, don’t forget to read it out loud, too. You might stumble when saying certain words aloud, which wouldn’t be the case when reciting the eulogy in your head. Circle or underline the words that are difficult for you to pronounce. These edits will remind you to pronounce the words slowly. Read the speech to someone else, as they can provide insight as to which words you should enunciate better, too. They can also give input on stories and phrases you might use during the funeral service to pay respect to your loved one.

2. Remember to Speak Slowly

Cincinnati-Ohio-funeral-servicesWhen you’re nervous, you might talk faster or insert “umms,” “ahhs,” and other filler words into the eulogy. Don’t forget to speak slowly, as this will allow you to process each word before you say it. To calm your nerves, take a few deep breaths on the way to the funeral service and when you walk to the podium. This increase of oxygen to the brain will trigger the parasympathetic nervous system to slow your heart rate and keep you calm.

3. Look At Your Audience

Creating a connection with the audience will help those in attendance remember the eulogy. Looking up from the paper to make eye contact with fellow mourners from time to time will break down the barrier. If you tell lighthearted anecdotes or a joke, you are more likely to get the desired reaction when looking at the crowd. It will also be easier for people to hear what you’re saying when your head is raised. This will provide a better sense of closure to everyone attending the funeral service.
