As a homeowner, a cockroach infestation can be daunting. Performing regular whole-house inspections is an excellent way to identify the signs of an invasion. Every few months, check your home for the below signs of cockroaches and call an exterminator to avoid a severe problem if you notice any of them.

How to Tell When You Have a Cockroach Problem

1. Discarded Skin & Droppings

When cockroaches are living in your home, you will find evidence of their waste. Cockroach droppings resemble coffee grounds or black pepper and can be anywhere the insect might walk.  Also, as nymph cockroaches evolve into adults, they will shed their skin five to eight times. If you spot these skins, note the area before cleaning it and calling an exterminator, because shelters tend to be near shedding zones.

2. Musty Odor

exterminatorGerman cockroaches are the most problematic species that exterminators get calls about. Unfortunately, when many of them are present, they emit an unpleasant odor throughout your home. If you notice a musty smell but can’t trace it to a leak or mold problem, cockroaches are likely nearby.

3. Hardened Egg Cases

Cockroaches lay their eggs in warm, humid areas, usually cracks in the bathroom or kitchen. Regularly check drawers, sinks, countertops, and behind and underneath appliances for possible egg casings. These hardened casings are brown or black and up to 8 millimeters long. If you notice any, vacuum them and call an exterminator to determine where the infestation is.
