The Elizabethan collar (e-collar) plays a vital role in pet recovery. Dogs can introduce bacteria to surgery sites or dislodge stitches, which is why your veterinarian will provide one after a spay, neuter, or other surgical procedure. However, it’s essential for your pet’s recovery. Use the following tips to keep them comfortable while they recover.

How to Help Your Dog Stay Comfortable With Their E-Collar

1. Move Obstructions out of Their Way

If you have decorative stands and other furniture that create tighter passages for your dog, move them out of the way temporarily. It’s not always easy for them to see, and navigating with the e-collar will take some getting used to.

As you clear paths, also help your dog move around. You may want to guide them down tight hallways or around the kitchen. It’s helpful to put up door gates to limit roaming while they adjust to the e-collar.

2. Reduce Stress for Them

3. Move Bowls to an Open Area

Your dog may have trouble drinking or eating from a bowl that’s too close to the wall, so move their dish to an open area. If the e-collar is especially deep, ask their veterinarian about removing it during mealtime. Since your dog is eating, they’re less likely to bother with the wound.

They must continue eating and drinking to avoid dehydration and malnourishment—health issues that could interfere with recovery and cause other problems.

4. Explore Alternatives

Dogs usually have to wear an e-collar 10-14 days after surgery. However, if they’re struggling with the one your veterinarian provided, explore alternatives. There are smaller plastic options, plush pillow collars, inflatables, and similar products designed for comfort.

You can also try recovery suits. These jacket-like suits allow your dog to fully move their heads while creating a barrier between them and the surgical site.
