You’ll find French fries offered as a side in almost every restaurant and sports bar. They’re an iconic food that can be served a number of ways, and because of the name, most people assume that they originated in France. This food has a unique history, and its origins are widely disputed. If you want to impress your friends next time you dine out, share the following history of French fries.

Belgium & France

French fries may have originated in Belgium, and not France. Potatoes were introduced to Europe by the Spanish in the 1500s. As they developed, it was the Belgians in the 17th or 18th century who began frying small, raw potato wedges. The Belgians often fried fish, and when the rivers would freeze and make fishing impossible, it’s assumed that they used the same technique on potatoes.

Around the same time, the French had begun frying various foods in fat and eventually tried potatoes. Advertised as “frittes” in the 1700s, these early fries became a popular street food before the French Revolution.

Thomas Jefferson’s Involvement

restaurant-atlantaThe name French fries may be attributed to President Thomas Jefferson. Having enjoyed them in France and the White House, it’s recorded that he referred to them as potatoes served in a French manner. This went on to inspire a recipe in an 1856 cookbook by E. Warren for “French fries.”

French fries didn’t become popular in the U.S. until after World War I. Having tried them while overseas, U.S. soldiers began spreading the word and serving French fries when they returned.

Modern Takes

French fries gained popularity for several reasons. Potatoes are relatively inexpensive, they are easy to prepare, and they can be served a number of ways. If you want to try the deep-fried potato batons in a Belgian-style, enjoy them with aioli, ketchup and mayo, curry, or tartar sauce. Explore Canadian poutine, which are thick French fries served with cheese curds and gravy. You can also try spicy, garlic-flavored Masala chips from Kenya that are topped with lemon. A popular option is chili cheese fries, which is an American favorite.
