It’s common for people to experience eye issues as they get older, such as dry eyes, presbyopia, and floaters. If you’re approaching your golden years, make eye care a top priority to help reduce the risk of vision problems.

How to Care for Your Eyes If You’re a Senior

1. Keep Your Eyes Moist

Although dry eyes are natural with age, they can cause discomfort and increase the risk of infections. To keep your eyes moist, take frequent breaks from the computer screen, avoid smoke, and drink plenty of water. You might also consider using lubricating eye drops for comfort and clearer vision.

2. Get Moving

Whether you take brisk walks or do yoga in your living room, regular physical activity can keep your eye health in good “shape”.

3. Pay Attention to Your Diet

Fatty fish, leafy greens, and citrus fruits are all helpful to reduce your risk of certain eye diseases. Try to limit your intake of sugary foods and refined carbs, as they can increase your risk for diabetes and, in turn, eye diseases.

4. Schedule Regular Eye Exams

Visit an eye doctor at least once a year for an exam, even if your vision seems fine. They can detect early signs of cataracts and eye diseases like macular degeneration that are common among seniors. The sooner an eye disease is discovered, the easier it is to treat.
