Your HVAC system works hard year-round. Help it function as efficiently as possible with these HVAC contractor-approved tips to not only save on monthly energy costs but also extend the life of the system.

5 Ways to Make Your HVAC System Last

1. Seal Air Leaks

Close air leaks around doors and windows with caulk and weatherstripping materials to avoid heat gain that makes your HVAC system work harder. Use caulk to seal foundation gaps that can also challenge your HVAC system. If you aren’t sure if a leak is present, use the classic incense trick: if the smoke “dances” when you put it near door and window frames, there’s a leak.

2. Clean & Change the Filter

hvac contractorReview your manufacturer’s instructions to determine how often you need to clean and change the system’s air filter. You may need to change the filter more often, depending on how many people live in your home and whether you have pets. Clogged filters restrict airflow and lead to overheating, while clean units will improve air quality and AC function.

3. Schedule Ductwork Cleaning

Get your ductwork cleaned to avoid additional airflow restrictions and lowered indoor air quality from pollutants such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and vermin excrement. Ductwork cleaning services also check for leaks that reduce airflow and stress your system.

4. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Check the outdoor unit about once a month or after a storm for debris buildup. Outdoor units are often subject to falling tree branches, leaves, twigs, and other debris that can clog their internal components and contribute to overheating and wear. Remove debris, trim nearby trees, and ensure the area around the unit remains clear to improve efficiency.

5. Request Routine Inspections

Schedule maintenance checks with your HVAC contractors to keep the unit clean and repair issues such as loose or worn parts. Request semi-annual inspections to identify problems before they have time to worsen and shorten your system’s lifespan.
