Cyclists interested in competing in races should focus on learning how to ride in a competition. There are a few match-specific tricks to help you earn a faster time and get more comfortable performing in trials. Here are four pieces of advice to try on your next race.

How to Better Your Chances of Winning a Cycling Time Trial

1. Study the Course

Many people get nervous before races, and anxiety will hinder performance. Appease your nerves by studying a map in advance to learn how to navigate the course, where the elevation changes, and where to get water or use the restroom. Plan how to approach turns and find out which hills will require extra energy, so you can lower efforts ahead of time to save fuel for tough areas.

2. Reduce Drag

Drag is the aerodynamic force that pushes against you while you ride, regardless of the wind conditions. This force slows you down, so dress to minimize resistance by donning shoe covers and tight-fitting lycra clothing. Wear a helmet that rounds at the front and points in the back to encourage the air to flow over the top of your head.

3. Warm Up

racesYour muscles will respond better to the bike when you warm up before the race. Get to the site early, so you can stretch, do lunges, and jog in place for a few minutes before starting. These exercises will lubricate your joints and reduce muscle fatigue.

4. Check Your Pace

When the starting gun goes off, it’s tempting to pedal with all your might to make it to the front of the pack. However, you should maintain a steady speed to avoid tiring yourself early. Use a bike watch or computer to keep track of your pace. Save your energy, so you can give it your all during the last few laps or miles to beat the competition and improve your time.

If you want to try a bike race, register for the Mana Time Trial during the Waimea Town Celebration. This annual, nine-day event takes place on Kauai, HI, from Feb. 13-21, 2021.
