Many auto repair issues are ones you can quickly identify, with the most common being leaking fluid. While any type of fluid leak is a cause for concern, you can streamline the maintenance process by knowing which component is the problem’s source. Here is how you can identify the origin of a leak and how you should handle it.

Pay Attention to the Color

The easiest way to identify the source of your leak is the color of the fluid. For example, engine oil is a yellowish amber when fresh, and turns dark brown or even black as it ages. These oil leaks appear directly under the engine and have an oily or burnt smell. However, transmission fluid can also turn brown with age and leaks from under the engine, but it has a reddish tint and a strong, sweet smell.

Power steering fluid is commonly red like the transmission’s, but appears near the driver’s seat. Brake fluid is slick and transparent with a yellow tint and will run from underneath your wheels. Coolant leaks from your engine, but is bright green, pink, or blue.

Don’t Ignore Leaks

Over time, leaks compromise various systems within your automobile, resulting in far more expensive damages. For example, leaking engine oil eventually cause the engine to overheat, leaving you stranded at the side of the road. Additionally, brake fluid leaks could cause your brake pedals to stop working suddenly.

After identifying the source of the leak, take your car to an auto technician. Leak repairs are vital and sometimes life-saving fixes, and will save you from greater auto trouble in the long run.
