A chandelier is a statement piece of decor. It serves not only a practical function, bringing light into a room, but also an aesthetic purpose, serving as a unique object that attracts the eye. Chandeliers have long been utilized for their practicality and beauty. Learn about their history below.

Early History of the Chandelier

The word “chandelier” dates back to 1736 and comes from the French word for candle holder—a derivative of the Latin word “candelabrum.” Chandeliers were invented well before this, however, dating back to the 9th century when they were used to hold candles.

At this time, chandeliers consisted simply of a wooden cross with a spike on each end. A candle was affixed to each spike. This device was later adapted to consist of multiple stacked rings made of metal, each ring holding multiple candles.

Modern History of the Chandelier

chandeliersBy the late 1500s, rock crystals were added to these metallic structures. The crystals refracted and diffused light, creating an even brighter and more dazzling effect. In the 17th century, craftsmen began incorporating other materials, like brass and cut quartz crystals.

Chandeliers could at first only be afforded by wealthier persons and institutions. They would be seen in the homes of the nobility and rich merchants, and in churches. This association of chandeliers with wealth remains to this day.

Chandelier design continued to evolve in the centuries that followed. In the 1800s, for example, Daniel Swarovski developed an innovative means of cutting glass. Today, chandeliers are made from all manner of materials, including diverse metals, crystals, and gemstones.
