One of the most essential pieces of safety equipment to have in your home is a fire extinguisher. Having one on hand in an emergency, and knowing how to use it, can protect your property and save lives. To learn more and ensure your family is prepared, review the following frequently asked questions.

Common Questions About Fire Extinguishers

What kinds of fire extinguishers are there?

There are different grades of fire extinguishers, each of which has different uses. However, the average extinguisher is called an "ABC" extinguisher, which means it can handle Class A, B, and C fires. This includes fires caused by common flammable materials, oil, gasoline, and other flammable liquids, and electricity.

Where should you put your fire extinguisher?

Fire ExtinguishersAt a minimum, there should be one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home. If your home is large, you may need to have more than one on each level so you can respond to fires within seconds. The extinguishers should be close to areas and appliances where fires are most common, such as the kitchen.

How do you use it?

Most fire extinguishers have a nozzle, safety pin, and handle. Pulling the pin allows you to squeeze the handle so the fire suppressant will spray from the nozzle. Point the nozzle at the base of the fire, and make long movements from side to side to coat the whole area.

What maintenance does it need?

There are two types of fire extinguishers: single-use and rechargeable. Both kinds have pressure gauges with a red zone to indicate when they're out of pressure. Single-use units need to be replaced when they're in the red, which can happen when you use them or when they go unused for too long. Alternatively, rechargeable units can be refilled when they're in the red. Check the pressure gauge at least once a month and get the unit refilled or replaced promptly if necessary.
