If you’re invited to a housewarming party, you can look forward to seeing your friend or family member’s new place and mingling with loved ones. Since putting together this gathering after moving to a new home takes quite a bit of effort, you should also do your part to ensure the party goes well with these etiquette do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Bring a gift.

Unless the invitation says not to, it’s polite to bring a gift to a housewarming party. Before buying one, check if the host has set up a registry for recommended gifts; if they have, stick to that list.

If there is no registry, you have more freedom. Some universally popular options include small house plants, a set of stemware, or a gift basket.

Arrive on time.

movingIn general, fashionably late is within 15 minutes of the suggested start time; any later is rude. Similarly, don’t overstay your welcome. When you notice the party thinning out, it’s time to say your goodbyes.

Don’t:

Ignore the RSVP.

The host needs to know how many people to expect to ensure they have enough supplies, so let them know that you’re going and if you’re bringing a guest. RSVP by the suggested date to give them ample time to prepare.

Explore on your own.

Most housewarming parties include a tour of the property, but if not, don’t roam around yourself. They might still be using rooms for storage and have boxes strewn about after moving, so only go where the host says you can.
