A set border is essential for every garden design. It provides a clear line and helps you more effectively maintain different plants contained in specific areas. Rocks can easily be used for creating these edges. However, it’s not as simple as setting down a few stones where you want a border to appear. Keep these steps in mind as you create edges around your garden.

3 Tips for Setting Up Rock Borders Around Your Garden

1. Mark & Dig

Before you make any changes to your landscaping, you need a clear idea of how you want the overall picture to look. Mark the areas where you want edges—you can even set down stones before digging.

Once you like the placement, dig a small trench in that spot, so the rocks can easily fit and won’t slide around once they’re placed. If you’re digging more than a few inches deep, always call 811 first to avoid hitting any underground utilities.

If you have grass butting up to the edges of your garden, you may want to edge the lawn a few inches away from the rocks. This isn’t required, but constantly trimming grass in between stones can be inconvenient. You might even save some of the dirt from digging the trench to fill in this area, so there’s a clear line between your grass and rock edges.

3. Set & Level Stones

Inside the trench, use leveling sand to create an even surface for your rocks. Use a tamper to compact the sand; this reduces settling over time, so your rocks will stay at one level for as long as possible. Then set each rock along the trench, and use your extra dirt to fill in any gaps between them.
