If you live in an area with frequent inclement weather, installing storm doors on home entrances is wise. When you maintain them properly, the durable panels can protect entry doors from water and wind damage in treacherous weather. They also provide insulation to keep heating and cooling costs low. To care for these investments, below are a few maintenance guidelines.

How to Maintain Storm Doors

1. Clean the Frame & Glass

Using a cloth to wipe down the metal frames with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water will remove dirt, salt, and environmental pollutants. When washing the glass, press the finger pulls to remove the panels for easier cleaning. Wipe the surfaces with a microfiber cloth first, as this will remove particles that could streak the surface. Use a window glass cleaner, wiping the panels from top to bottom to avoid streaks.

2. Replace Weatherstripping & Seal Gaps

Moisture can also seep through openings and corrode the primary door materials, as well as create a mess inside. Use a silicone-based caulk to fill in the gaps. As air and water can also leak through areas with detached or deteriorating weatherstripping, replace it when you notice cracking or missing sections.

3. Check the Panel

If a storm door’s hinges aren’t secure, the panel won’t provide an airtight seal. You might hear the panel hitting the entrance opening in windy weather, which could cause premature wear or break the frame. In addition to tightening the hinge screws, you can also turn the screw on the pneumatic cylinder clockwise to close the door slower and counterclockwise to move it faster.
