Asphalt paving makes for an even driving surface. When potholes develop, however, the smooth ride is interrupted. Find out how those pesky potholes form and why it's so important to have them fixed quickly below.

How Do Potholes Develop?

When water coats asphalt, for example, because of rain or melting snow, moisture permeates tiny pores in the pavement. If the temperature drops below freezing, these small droplets of water expand, causing hairline cracks in the asphalt.

These cracks become larger and larger over time; as the impact of the freeze-thaw cycle becomes greater, the larger the crack gets. Eventually, the contracting and expanding pavement will wear to the point that it collapses completely, resulting in a hole.

Why Are Quick Asphalt Repairs Needed?

asphaltDriving over a large pothole can damage the undercarriage of the vehicle, even causing harm to parts of the body, like the bumper or low-hanging side skirt. The suspension, which is designed to absorb impact, may also become bent out of alignment with especially big jolts. Meanwhile, tires are susceptible to issues like sidewall bulges, tread separation, and flats.

Even worse, the person driving the vehicle may lose their grip on the steering wheel due to the bump that comes with driving over the pothole, increasing the risk of an accident. If the pothole is on your property, and an accident occurs, you may be held liable in a subsequent personal injury lawsuit.
