Nothing is more important than having confidence in your tow hitch when you’re towing a heavy load. There are several types to choose from, with fifth wheel and gooseneck being two popular options. They both require a pickup truck for installation and mount into the truck bed. Each has something unique to offer, and by understanding the differences, you can be confident you make the right selection for the job.

The Difference Between Gooseneck & Fifth Wheel Hitches

Gooseneck

Gooseneck trailers require some towing experience because of their size and maneuverability, so they’re best for drivers that have towed heavy loads before. They’re often used for horse trailers, commercial storage containers, and flatbeds. Goosenecks are rated for up to 30,000 pounds of towing capacity, which is why they are typically used in commercial towing and agriculture.

This design evenly disperses the weight of the tow trailer evenly over the rear axle rather than the rear of the frame to reduce strain on the vehicle and to give the driver more stability. This also allows the trailer to swing nearly 180 degrees in either direction so drivers can navigate tight turns without sacrificing the smoothness of the ride.

Fifth Wheel

A fifth wheel hitch uses a kingpin and jaw system to secure large trailers. Like a gooseneck, this is attached to the truck bed, so drivers enjoy a wide range of maneuverability. This hitch system also distributes the weight over the rear axle.

Fifth Wheels are bigger and bulkier than a gooseneck hitch. They take up more space in the bed of the truck, but there is the option of removing it from the truck bed. Fifth Wheels are typically used for RV travel trailers and campers and are rated for up to 30,000 pounds of towing capacity,
