Winter is finally coming to an end, and spring is starting to bloom. As your yard’s vegetation begins to come to life, there are a few steps you can take to help maximize new growth. To ensure you enjoy an immaculate lawn this spring and summer, here’s what lawn maintenance services you’ll need during the month of April.

4 Critical Lawn Maintenance Jobs for April

1. Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Pre-emergent lawn spray is a type of herbicide that penetrates the top 1-2 inches of soil to kill weeds before they germinate. It works exceptionally well for broad-leaf weeds, like crabgrass, chickweed, dandelion, and ground ivy, and it should be applied once in February and again in April.

2. Fertilizer

If you have a thick, lush lawn, weeds will have fewer opportunities to take root because they’ll be competing with grass shoots that are already healthy and established.

3. Spot Treatment

If weeds have already taken root in your lawn, have them spot-treated with a potent direct-contact weed killer. Some bluegrass species are stubborn and challenging to remove—they can stay dormant for years and will leave unsightly brown spots in your lawn during the summer. If you see bright green patches of seedy grass, it could be bluegrass. A skilled technician can determine which herbicide to use to kill the weed and keep it from returning.

4. Insect & Mosquito Repellent

Hibernating insects also begin to emerge in early spring, so now is an ideal time to treat your lawn with insecticides. Lawn insecticide spray protects against over 1,000 pests, including fire ants, ticks, fleas, and spiders. You can have it applied in both April and July. For mosquitoes, treatment is applied once every 28 days between April and August.
