Shiva is a religious mourning practice traditionally done in Judaism. This period of mourning begins when returning home after the funeral services of a loved one who has passed away. If the deceased or their family is Jewish, learn what is involved and how you can host a shiva.

What Is a Shiva?

funeral servicesShiva is the seven-day mourning period, which begins immediately after returning to your home from the funeral service. During this period, the mourner stays at their own home or the home of the deceased. They do not go to work, school, or go about their other normal routines. Friends, family, and loved ones are welcome to visit the mourner by making a shiva call, to provide comfort and support. Usually, the immediate family such as children, parents, siblings, and spouses of the deceased sit shiva. Someone close to the family typically coordinates the shiva, so the family themselves can focus on the mourning.

How Do You Plan One?

Begin by determining how long the family will sit shiva. Sometimes families do not stick with the traditional seven days. You should then determine when you want the home to be open for visitors and when the services will be held. People often have their calling hours in the evening, with their minyan service scheduled toward the end of the mourning period. Have your funeral director or rabbi help get the information to the community so that they know when and where to visit.

Set a meal prep schedule, either by hiring a caterer or having friends and family sign up. There should be enough food for the mourners and visitors. Someone should also come by regularly to clean up the house, so the family doesn’t need to do so. Prepare the home by covering up the mirrors, set up low chairs and cushions for mourners, provide kippot for visitors, and prayer books for services.
