It’s smart to take measures that ensure you don’t get locked out of your home. This involves key duplication, then some creativity for hiding the spare in your yard. Here are a few places unauthorized persons won’t think to look.

Where to Hide House Keys to Keep Them Safe

1. Fake Rock

A flower pot is an easy place to guess, but not many people expect you to have hollow rocks. You can usually find these in stores that sell items for gardening. Just make sure the rock isn’t right by the porch so it isn’t obvious. Also, choose an option that’s heavy to weigh the key down so it doesn’t blow away in a storm.

2. Dryer Vent Hood

The vent hood is a valuable external part of your dryer, but it’s also a smart place to hide a spare key. Simply attach a tiny magnet to your key with hot glue and place it on the inside of the vent. Since most people look for keys underneath objects, they’re less likely to check this area.

3. Garden Hose

If you’re worried about it slipping in and getting lost, wrap it in a small bag so you can wedge it near the top. Only do this for brass keys to avoid rust, and don’t forget to remove the bag before using the hose.

4. Siding

The edge of your house’s siding may also provide the gap you need to hide a key. You must make sure it’s wedged far enough that it won’t blow with the wind. Tie a string to the key to make it easier to pull back out.

5. Garden

If you don’t plan on using the spare key often, bury it in your garden or flowerbed. First, place it in a small container, such as a candy tin, and dig a spot marked by a plant or flower. Don’t dig too deep to prevent this from affecting the roots. Pat the soil lightly to conceal it.
