Spring brings warm temperatures and a fresh start for your landscaping. There are a few essential steps to prepare your yard for the new season, from landscape grading to removing debris. Below are tips to remember this year.

How to Get Your Property Ready for Spring

1. Clean Up

Your first step in preparing your yard is to clean up from winter. Clear away branches, dead leaves, twigs, and debris, and look for broken limbs that need to be removed from trees. Rake leaves and thatch, so your grass will have plenty of ventilation to grow, especially when you add new seed.

2. Grade the Landscape

Landscape grading is used to level land to prepare it for everything from plants to hardscaping elements. Before you begin any landscape design, grade the area so that water flows away from structures, like your home, and to stop soil erosion. Landscape grading also provides a slope, so water doesn’t pool and cause a mosquito and pest infestation.

3. Take Care of Weeds

Once the weather hits 55 degrees Fahrenheit, the pace at which weeds will overtake your greenery increases. Apply preemergent herbicide for crabgrass at least eight weeks before you plan to seed the lawn.

4. Trim Greenery

Prune trees and shrubs to remove dead limbs and branches. This boosts new growth and ensures it is healthy. It is best to do this when trees are dormant so that they heal more easily.

For flowering bushes, trim after the first bloom, but avoid cutting limbs with flowers. While shrubs are easier to manage, tree pruning on particularly tall arbors should be handled by professionals for safety.

5. Fertilize the Lawn

Fertilize your lawn to boost nutrients in your soil for optimal growth. Choose one with preemergent herbicide to take care of both weed control and soil health at the same time. Hit every corner, bare spots, and sections near features like paths and driveways where weeds tend to grow, and the soil needs attention.
