Professional teeth whitening treatments can brighten your smile by several shades. These solutions have a higher concentration of active ingredients than store-bought kits, and when well-maintained with consistent oral hygiene habits, their results last several months. As a bonus, the process of in-office whitening is simple and quick. Discover the steps you can expect below.

3 Steps for In-Office Teeth Whitening Treatments

1. Brief Consultation

First, your dentist will discuss your candidacy for teeth whitening treatments with you during a short office visit. While whitening is a popular cosmetic treatment suited for most patients, people with braces, dentures, and other orthodontics or dental prosthetics may not be eligible. Once it’s determined you’re a good candidate, your dentist will assess your current enamel shade and discuss the results you can expect to achieve through treatment. If you’re overdue for a cleaning, they may recommend you receive one first to remove any stubborn tartar, which could impede your whitening results.

2. Lip & Gum Protection

First, however, your dentist will protect your soft tissue against any potential irritation from the whitening agent. They’ll use a lip retractor to gently keep your lips away from the work area. Then, they’ll apply a gingival barrier, which acts as a protective gel, to the gums. If you’re prone to tooth sensitivity, they may also use a special compound to reduce any discomfort.

3. Whitening Application & Activation

Finally, the dentist will perform the teeth whitening treatment by applying a specially formulated gel to the teeth. The solution typically contains a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide. In some offices, a bleaching lamp is also used to activate the whitener. Your dentist may apply several coats of whitening gel to achieve the desired results, and the treatment is given time to work its magic. Once results have been achieved, the dentist will use suction to gently remove the whitening gel, followed by a brief, gentle cleaning.
