Dust mites are microscopic, but they can make you feel miserable. They can hide in your chairs, sofa, recliner, bedding, pillows, and custom draperies and cause sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and other unpleasant symptoms. Below are a few different ways to defend against dust mites.

How to Reduce Dust Mites

1. Reduce Humidity

Dust mites thrive in moist and humid environments. That’s why you should try to keep the humidity below 50% in your home. In addition to running your air conditioner, invest in a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and are available in several different sizes, depending on the size of your home.

2. Replace Custom Draperies

custom draperiesCustom draperies enhance the look of your home, but they can also trap dust and moisture, which dust mites eat. To keep them at bay, replace your custom draperies with blinds. They are easier to clean and don’t allow dust mites to hide.

3. Wash Your Bedding

Dust mites burrow in warm bedding material. However, they don’t like hot temperatures. Remember to wash your sheets, pillowcases, and bedcovers in water that’s at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit once a week. Then, dry your bedding at the same temperature to kill any mites that survive the wash.

4. Control the Dust

Because dust mites feed on dust, you should remove as much as possible from your home. Wipe down cabinets, countertops, and other areas that accumulate dust with a damp cloth. Clean your carpeting, rugs, and furniture with a vacuum cleaner that has a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. These capture microscopic dust particles that regular vacuums often miss.
