Electrical training is an essential part of the trade, providing insight into the latest techniques and establishing industry safety standards. It also familiarizes users with the basic tools for the job. Here is a breakdown of some of the most common tools and how to use them safely to ensure your team has the proper level of protection.

4 Common Tools of the Electrician Trade

1. Insulated Gloves

The different layers of these gloves allow electricians to work in close proximity to open wires. Regular testing is mandatory, so check the date stamps on the label to verify that everything is up to code. If the date is in the past, then the gloves should be sent to an accredited laboratory for testing, accessible through the North American Independent Laboratories for Protective Equipment Testing

2. Flame Retardant Shirt

Make sure the shirt’s material is “arc-rated,” which means it’s made to resist electrical currents and will reduce the risk of a burn. Look for clothing that meets NFPA 70E PPE Categories 1 and 2 for general electrical work. If the risk of a shock is greater, then get Categories 3 and 4. All information can be found on the label.

3. Voltage Tester

Use products that display the exact voltage they’re able to withstand, such as 1000 V CAT III and 600 V CAT IV. Not knowing this during electrical training could create an opportunity for injury.

4. Conduit Bender

A conduit bender allows electricians to shape the materials for their wiring routes. It features a handle portion that stands on the floor with a curved component at the top. Lay the pipe within the groove and apply pressure to bend.

Since there’s a chance that the tool could slip, you must wear eye protection and non-skid shoes while using it.
