For many church-going Christians, Lent is a fantastic way to strengthen their connection to God through sacrifice. Most will give up one or more luxuries during the 40 days of Lent, but much like New Year’s resolutions, many will struggle to follow their plan until the end. Luckily, there are a few tips the church has found to help you and the congregation stick to your goals this Lent.

How to Maintain Lent Resolutions

1. Write it Down

Whatever the resolution is, the first step should be physically writing it down on paper. Studies have shown that this act increases the likelihood of achieving your goals by 40%. Once you’ve written it down, keep it in a place that’s easily visible to remind you of what you want to accomplish.

2. Make a Plan

Having a plan helps make the resolution seem less daunting and gives you a clear path for success. For example, if you’re planning on giving up certain foods, write down alternative meals, and plan on doing meal preparation during the week. Make sure the plan is realistic and easy to stick to for the best chance at success.

3. Work With a Partner

It’s easier to slip up if you’re the only person holding yourself accountable, so find a family member or friend at church to share your resolution with. By working together, you’ll both meet your goals for Lent.

4. Take It Slowly

When Lent begins, thinking of giving something up or adding a task to your busy schedule can seem impossible, so tackle your goals one day at a time. Rather than focusing on the finish line, make individual goals for each day that’ll help you meet your overall resolution. At the end of each day, evaluate your progress, and eventually, you’ll succeed and finish.

5. Pray

You cannot overstate the power of prayer, and it can give you the strength to stick to your goals and understand why you’re making these sacrifices. Whether it’s praying during a sermon at church or talking to God at home, always make time for prayer to help achieve your resolution this Lent.
