Your tires are one of the parts of your car that's most vulnerable to damage. They're always in contact with the road, and they're made of soft rubber instead of metal. To make them last as long as possible between trips to a tire dealer, you should watch out for conditions and habits that make a puncture or a blowout more likely. Here are some of the most common problems that cause damage.

What to Watch For to Protect Your Tires

1. Road Damage

Large cracks, ruts, and especially potholes can stretch and bend your treads in ways they weren't meant to move. The bigger the stretch and the faster it happens, the more likely the rubber is to tear. When you see potholes, avoid them if you can, or slow down to drive over them to minimize damage. If you have potholes in a driveway or road on your property, repair them as soon as possible and don't park on them.

2. Debris

A sharp object can punch through your treads and create a leak. Nails and screws are particularly likely to cause damage, although the holes they make are also usually easy to fix. Sharp rocks, wood, metal, or glass on the road can also tear up tires, so, once again, drive around them if you can, or get out and clear them away.

3. Wear & Weakening

TiresYour tires are most durable when you first get them. As you use them, the rubber wears down and can also become brittle due to weathering. This makes it easier to tear. The problem gets even worse in hot weather since heat softens rubber, and it's worse still if you put unusual wear on your tires—for instance, scraping against a curb, which can damage the walls and the valve stem. You can compensate by avoiding curbs, being extra careful in hot weather, rotating tires to keep the wear even, and checking for any signs of wear, cracking, or bulging that might weaken them.
