If you need motivation to get through spring cleaning, it might help to remember that clutter has been linked to elevated stress levels. A little decluttering can go a long way, and slimming down the number of items in your closet system is the first step. The following tips will help you maintain a wardrobe you look forward to using.

How to Get a Minimal & Functional Wardrobe

1. Set Your Goals

To make the task more manageable, set realistic goals. For example, if your closet overflows with items, your goal might be to discard enough so you can see the floor of the closet. If you already have fewer pieces, decide how many of each type of garment you want.

Based on your schedule, create a timeline for the project. This could be an afternoon or a weekend. Do your best to stick to this so you don’t get unnecessarily stressed.

2. Sort the Pieces

Before you start, create a system for sorting the clothes you don’t want. You might label bags for “donating,” “tossing,” and “selling.”

  • Have I worn this in the past 6 months?

  • Am I excited about wearing this?

  • Do I feel good when I wear this?

If you answer no to any of the above questions, it’s time to part ways. You can try to sell pieces that cost more or are from designer brands.

3. Create a Closet System

Once you know what to keep, create an organized closest system. Arrange your items not only by category (lounging clothes, jeans, sweaters, etc.), but also by how often you wear them. For example, you’ll likely visit your underwear and sock drawers daily, so put these at the top.

Don't simply toss items of one category into a drawer or rack, which could recreate the clutter. Organize them according to color or season so they’re easy to find.
