Although the furnace works hard to keep you cozy through the winter, you’re probably looking forward to warm days when you won't need it. As you prepare to turn it off and use the AC, the following HVAC maintenance tips will ensure the furnace is ready for next winter.

How to Shut Down the Furnace for the Summer

1. Change Filters

The furnace’s air filters trap dust, debris, and other pollutants to keep the air in your home clean. In many HVAC systems, the furnace and AC share an air exchanger, so a dirty filter also impedes the flow of cool air. This can lead to moisture getting trapped inside the system, creating the potential for mold growth inside the ductwork.

Dirty filters also make the air blower work harder than necessary to reach the right temperature, which strains the system. Change the filters every three months—or every month if the filter is fiberglass or you have pets—to save on energy costs, protect the house, and safeguard your health.

3. Turn Off Gas

HVACIf you have a gas furnace and leave the pilot light on in the summer, it wastes fuel and makes the AC work harder to compensate for the extra heat.

Turn off the gas to avoid extra energy costs, leaks, or dangerous buildup in the furnace. If you’re unsure how to do so, consult an HVAC technician.

3. Schedule Inspection

A long winter can take a toll on the HVAC system; getting the furnace inspected now makes the transition to cold weather next season easier, potentially saving you money on expensive repairs.

Most furnaces rely on a forced-air blower powered by a motor, and breakage of the belt can disrupt the system. A technician will identify signs of wear and, if necessary, replace the belt. They will also properly lubricate parts so they’ll work efficiently and without friction.
