Allergy season brings with it all kinds of eye problems, such as redness, puffiness, and itching. In severe cases, these symptoms can be debilitating. By following a few simple tips, though, you may be able to reduce the impact of allergies and make everyday life a little easier.

3 Eye Care Tips for Allergy Season

1. Compensate for Your Medication’s Side Effects

Antihistamines can dry out the eyes by inhibiting tear production. While watery eyes are a common problem for those with allergies, dryness will only worsen itchiness and irritation.

If your medication causes severe dry eye, talk to your doctor about alternatives. Should antihistamines be the best way to treat your allergies, your optometrist can recommend preservative-free artificial tears to combat the dryness.

2. Apply Cool Compresses

If you don't have any actual compresses, run a facecloth under cold water, wring it out, and lay it across your eyes. To fight puffiness while you sleep, elevate your pillow slightly so gravity won't contribute to its severity.

3. Avoid Triggers

When possible, avoid the allergens that cause the worst of your symptoms. For example, stay inside when the pollen count is highest—between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.—and maintain a clean home to keep dust, pet dander, and mold at bay.

If you require corrective eyewear, opt for glasses instead of contact lenses on days when allergens are unavoidable. Dust and pollen can accumulate in your contacts, thereby increasing your exposure all day long.
