Whether you’re painting a few rooms in your home or covering the entire exterior of your house, you might be deciding between oil or latex paint. Both offer distinct advantages unique to their application. Here’s more about each paint so that you can determine what’s best for your home improvement project.

Should I Use Oil or Latex Paint?

Oil

Due to its composition, oil-based paint is thicker than water-based latex. It requires a primer for smooth adhesion and can be challenging to use due to the viscosity. The product can also take weeks to fully cure depending on how much was used and on what surface.

However, oil-based products provide a glossy, smooth finish that offers excellent moisture resistance and durability. They also shrink less than latex versions and don’t require as much paint to cover assorted surfaces thoroughly.

Consider long-lasting oil options for areas of your home subject to frequent use, such as windows and doors, as well as various metal surfaces. Because oil products are water-free, you’ll enjoy greater protection against corrosion.

Latex

paintThinner and easier to use than oil selections, non-toxic and flexible latex doesn’t require a primer and is typically cheaper than oil options. It provides both matte and glossy finishes, and usually doesn't take more than two hours to cure. The product also won’t yellow and offers easy cleanup.

While latex will not peel or crack, its water content can cause wood to swell, which can present sanding and refinishing challenges. Latex also stains easily. Use latex on wooden surfaces that are not subject to excessive swelling, such as wood siding and porch floors in relatively temperate regions, as well as on stucco, fiber cement, drywall, and plaster. Its flexibility, eco-friendliness, and fast drying time make it ideal for outdoor projects.
