Fluoride is a natural mineral that’s used in dental care products to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Due to its benefits, pediatric dentists recommend children and adolescents receive some form of fluoride daily to combat decay and support tooth and gum health. Here are a few tips for parents about fluoride usage.

Do:

Use fluoride toothpaste.

Most commercial toothpaste formulas at the drug store contain fluoride, and it’s safe for kids to use. Once your child’s teeth emerge, brush them with a small amount of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. Increase the amount to a pea-size dab when they’re 3-years-old.

Teach them to spit.

Consuming too much fluoride may cause an upset stomach. Fortunately, you can avoid this discomfort by adhering to the age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste recommendations. Teach your child to spit the toothpaste into the sink after brushing and tell them never to swallow it. If they’re too young to spit, tilt their mouth toward the sink or into a cup so the liquid can come out.

Don’t:

Use adult toothpaste.

dental careAlthough you use the correct proportions of toothpaste, make sure it contains the right amount of fluoride. Toothpaste formulas that are branded to adults tend to have higher amounts of fluoride than children’s brands. For the most accurate dose for your little ones, you should seek brands that are specially designed for kids.

Over brush.

Your child will receive the proper dosage of fluoride through toothpaste, as well as any dental care supplements their pediatric dentist may prescribe. If too much fluoride is used while their teeth are still developing, they’ll become susceptible to enamel fluorosis, which discolors the permanent teeth. Always adhere to the recommended amounts set by their pediatric dentist.
