Kids experience a variety of different challenges as they move through their school years. From peer pressure to academic stresses, there are a variety of scenarios that can impact their mental health. By recognizing the warning signs, you’ll be able to provide your young ones with the professional help they need. The guide below explores some of the most common.

When Should You Consider Counseling for Your Child?

1. Sudden Lowering of Grades

While struggling in certain subjects is normal, a sudden drop in grades may stem from depression or anxiety. If your child starts coming home with lower marks on their report cards, talk to their teachers to see if you can pinpoint the cause of the issue. Depending on the circumstances, a tutor or a counselor may be able to help them work through classroom issues.

2. Bullying

Children who get bullied at school often struggle with mental health problems as a result. Ask your kids how their peers treat them during lunchtime, recess, and after-school activities.

While they might tell you if harassment is occurring, also pay attention to any unexplained injuries, unexpectedly damaged or missing items, and changes in their appetite and sleeping patterns. Report any confirmed instances of bullying to their principal and make an appointment with a counselor.

3. Social Withdrawal

4. Family History

If you have a family history of depression, anxiety, emotional disorders, or mental illness, have your kids evaluated by a counselor a couple of times per year. They will monitor any emotional and behavioral changes, identifying the first signs of issues and providing treatment as necessary.
