While the toilet may seem like any other disposal system, it was designed to dispose of only water-soluble waste, so flushing anything other than waste and toilet paper can cause major problems. Therefore, unless you want to call the plumber to clear a clogged toilet, avoid flushing the following.

What to Keep out of the Toilet

1. Baby Products

While dirty diapers contain waste, the thick material likely won’t make it down the drain, causing a huge mess. You shouldn’t flush any other baby diapering supplies either, particularly baby wipes. Any kind of wipes, in fact, don't belong in the toilet, including cleaning wipes. They don’t break down the way toilet paper does, causing clogs and filling your septic tank faster.

2. Dental Floss

plumberDental floss also belongs in the garbage can, not the toilet. When you flush floss, it can ultimately become a sort of net, catching and retaining debris, causing clogs that require a plumber’s help to clear. Floss can also wrap around septic system components and cause them to malfunction or even burn out.

3. Bleach

You might turn to bleach to clean and disinfect your toilet, but that’s actually not a good idea. Using bleach in the toilet can cause corrosion in the pipes and septic system. Pouring bleach in your toilet can also cause interactions with other gases and substances in the septic system, leading to toxic fumes.

If you have a septic system, bleach can disrupt the natural bacteria in the tank, making it harder for waste to breakdown. Try using vinegar to remove and freshen your toilet instead.
