Preparing your yard for spring will ensure a lush, green lawn and verdant outdoor spaces to enjoy throughout the warmer months of the year. As soon as the spring thaw begins and frost is no longer a concern, it's time to start thinking about landscaping. Below are a few ways to get your yard ready for spring.

How to Tackle Spring Landscaping

1. Fertilize at 55 Degrees

Fertilizer provides your lawn with the nutrients it needs to grow rich, green blades. But timing is everything for this task. You want to apply the first application when the ground reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit. A good way to tell if it's attained this temperature is by checking out the lilac bushes in your yard or neighborhood — if they're starting to bloom, the ground is ready. This usually happens sometime in April.

For the best results, use a slow-release fertilizer and plan for five applications total throughout the spring and summer.

2. Aerate & Overseed the Lawn

landscapingOnce the fertilizer is in, aerate and overseed the lawn. Aeration involves making a series of small holes in the ground to allow for better absorption of air, water, sun, and fertilizer. This results in stronger roots and healthier grass.

Overseeding tackles patchy spots by planting seed directly into the turf in these areas, about a quarter-inch deep for an optimum seed-to-soil ratio. This increases the chances of healthy growth in more stubborn locations.

3. Address Weeds & Other Buildup

After a long winter's nap, your yard has likely amassed a layer of organic debris, including dead growth, fallen leaves and branches, and weeds. Make it a priority to remove this winter accumulation from your yard so it looks its best for the spring bloom. You'll be giving fresh air and light to the soil underneath, thereby encouraging new growth.

This is also the time to apply a preemergent weed killer as a preventative measure, especially if your lawn is prone to invasive weeds like crabgrass.
